The six big thrift apps — what each one is actually best at

No rankings, no affiliate spin — what each marketplace is genuinely best at.

"Best thrift app" is the wrong question — each of the six big secondhand marketplaces is best at something. Here's the map, buyer's perspective, no ranking games.

eBay — the archive

The deepest secondhand inventory on earth and the only one with real auctions. Best for: true vintage, rare pieces, dead-stock, anything searchable with very specific terms. The skill ceiling is high — precise queries, misspelling hunts and saved searches reward the patient.

Depop — the curator

Young sellers curating Y2K, streetwear, and era pieces. Best for: finding the aesthetic without knowing the exact item. You pay for the curation; haggle via offers.

Poshmark — the closet

America's closets, listed. Best for: specific mainstream-to-contemporary brands in your size, workwear, and a surprisingly deep designer section. Offers culture — never pay asking.

Vinted — the bargain bin (affectionately)

No seller fees means the lowest asking prices of the big apps. Best for: basics, everyday brands, and lucky finds priced by people who just want the closet space back.

Mercari — the garage sale

A general marketplace, not fashion-first — which is exactly why clothing slips through cheap. Best for: mispriced finds from sellers who don't know the resale market for what they're holding.

ThredUp — the consignment warehouse

Managed consignment: one company photographs, grades and ships everything. Best for: condition-graded basics and brands at outlet-like prices, with consistent measurements — the opposite of the treasure-hunt chaos, and useful for exactly that reason.

The catch: your item doesn't know where it's listed

The maddening truth of this landscape is that the piece you want could be on any of the six — and if the seller cross-posted it, it's on several at different prices. Searching one app means betting your grail is on that app.
